“When I first met Mary Fowler, I’ll admit she wasn’t what I expected,” Nathan Cleary said quietly, reflecting on how things began. “My mind was fully on footy and I wasn’t looking for anything else. I think that’s the honest truth for me at that stage of my life. Everything revolved around training, recovery, games, and trying to be better every week. There wasn’t much space for anything outside of that.”
He paused for a moment, as if replaying that first meeting in his head.
“But Mary was different,” he continued. “She had this spark about her. She was confident, full of energy, and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. That stood out straight away. In sport, you meet a lot of people who are talented, but not everyone carries themselves with that kind of natural presence. She did.”
Cleary admitted that at first, he didn’t fully know how to read the situation. Their worlds were similar in some ways—elite sport, pressure, expectations—but also completely different in rhythm and culture. “At the time, I wasn’t sure how things would go,” he said. “I was cautious, maybe even a bit closed off without realizing it. When you’re focused on your career, you almost build walls without meaning to.”
But something about Fowler’s personality kept breaking through those walls in small, unexpected ways.
“The more I got to know her, the more I realized how special she really is,” he said, correcting himself mid-thought, as if the sentence deserved to be completed properly. “Not just as a player, but as a person. She’s grounded in a way that’s hard to explain unless you’re around her. There’s pressure on her, just like there is on me, but she doesn’t let it define who she is.”
He described how conversations started small at first—casual chats, brief moments after training, simple check-ins that slowly turned into something more meaningful. “It wasn’t like some big dramatic moment where everything changed,” Cleary said. “It was gradual. You just start enjoying someone’s company. You start looking forward to talking to them. You start noticing things—how they think, how they laugh, how they see the world.”
Cleary also spoke about the balance of two high-profile sporting careers and how that shapes any connection. “People probably don’t see that side of it,” he said. “There’s travel, schedules, media, expectations from clubs and country. You don’t just have free time like normal relationships. So everything has to be understood differently. There’s patience required from both sides.”
He didn’t shy away from admitting that it hasn’t always been simple. “There are days where we’re both tired, both dealing with pressure, both in completely different parts of the world,” he said. “But what I’ve learned from her is that communication matters more than perfection. You don’t have to get everything right. You just have to show up for each other in the ways you can.”
Cleary reflected on how Fowler’s perspective has influenced him beyond personal life. “She’s made me look at things differently,” he said. “In rugby league, you can get tunnel vision. It’s all results, performance, recovery. But she reminds me there’s more to life than what happens on the field. That doesn’t mean I care less about footy—it just means I think a bit more clearly about everything around it.”
He smiled slightly as he added, “She doesn’t try to change who I am. I think that’s important. She just understands me in a way that makes things feel a bit lighter, even when life is hectic.”
Looking back on his earlier hesitation, Cleary said he’s learned not to judge moments too quickly. “If I had stuck with my first mindset, I probably would’ve missed out on getting to know someone really special,” he said. “And that would’ve been a shame, honestly.”
As the conversation came to a close, he summed it up simply: “At the end of the day, it’s not about expectations or timing. It’s about connection. And sometimes the people you don’t expect to matter in your life end up making the biggest impact.”
