🔦 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Two Former Vols Honored for Elite Professional Careers
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Volunteers continue to shine far beyond Neyland Stadium, as two of the program’s most accomplished alumni have been officially recognized for their exceptional professional careers—a testament to the Volunteer spirit that never fades.
This week, former Vols standouts Derek Barnett and JaJuan Smith were each honored by their respective leagues and alma mater for sustained excellence at the next level, serving as proud examples of what it means to wear the Power T.
Derek Barnett, a defensive end who broke Reggie White’s all-time sack record at Tennessee, was recognized by the NFLPA for his impact on and off the field. Now entering his eighth NFL season, Barnett has earned a Super Bowl ring, recorded multiple 10+ sack seasons, and gained praise for his work in community advocacy. His relentless work ethic and Volunteer roots continue to fuel his rise as one of the league’s most consistent edge defenders.
Meanwhile, JaJuan Smith, a former Tennessee basketball sharpshooter, was inducted into the European Basketball Hall of Excellence after an impressive 13-year international career. Smith, known for his perimeter shooting and defensive grit in orange and white, translated his game seamlessly across global leagues, becoming a fan favorite in countries like France, Turkey, and Spain.
> “We play for Tennessee, but we carry Tennessee with us wherever we go,” Smith said in a statement.
From the SEC spotlight to international arenas and NFL stadiums, Barnett and Smith embody what it means to be a Vol for Life. Their success not only brings pride to Tennessee fans, but also inspires the next generation of student-athletes chasing greatness.
