Zach Lowe’s Bold Claim: Miami Heat’s Pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo Is a Long Shot, But Kevin Durant Is Within Reach
NBA insider Zach Lowe has never been one to mince words, and his recent take on the Miami Heat’s offseason aspirations has stirred debate among fans. Speaking on the possibility of the Heat landing superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, Lowe was blunt: “If Giannis stuff comes up, I don’t see how they have any shot in hell at getting into that. Durant is much more realistic to me.”
Lowe’s statement highlights a stark reality for the Heat, who have long been known for swinging big in the trade market. While Miami has a reputation for landing superstar talent—most notably during the LeBron James era—Lowe’s assessment suggests that Giannis may be a bridge too far. The two-time MVP has a strong connection with Milwaukee, and any trade would require an enormous haul of assets, likely far beyond what Miami can realistically offer without gutting their roster.
But Lowe’s belief that Kevin Durant is a “much more realistic” target offers a glimmer of hope for Heat fans. Durant, who is currently with the Phoenix Suns, has experienced his fair share of turmoil in recent years. From a frustrating stint in Brooklyn to the ups and downs in Phoenix, the possibility of Durant seeking a fresh start in Miami cannot be ruled out. Miami has shown interest in Durant in the past, and with their combination of tradeable assets and a winning culture, they remain an attractive destination for the former MVP.
However, even landing Durant would come with challenges. Miami would likely need to part with young talent, future draft picks, and key role players to match Durant’s value. But for Pat Riley and the Heat organization, these are the kinds of high-stakes moves they live for.
For Miami, it’s all about swinging for the fences. And while Giannis may be out of reach, the dream of seeing Kevin Durant in a Heat jersey is still very much alive.
