WVU’s Small Selected by Memphis Grizzlies in Second Round of NBA Draft
West Virginia University standout RaeQuan Battle, widely known as “Small,” has taken a major step in his basketball career after being selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft. The selection marks a proud moment for both the player and the WVU basketball program, as Small becomes the latest Mountaineer to make the leap to the professional ranks.
Small’s journey to the NBA has been anything but conventional. After transferring to WVU and overcoming eligibility hurdles early in the 2024–25 season, he quickly made a name for himself with his explosive scoring, high basketball IQ, and relentless competitiveness. Standing at 6-foot-4, the combo guard averaged over 17 points per game during his senior season, often taking over in key moments and earning a reputation as a clutch performer.
The Memphis Grizzlies, a team known for its focus on gritty, defensive-minded basketball, saw potential in Small’s tenacity and ability to create his own shot. His athleticism, combined with his on-ball pressure and versatility, makes him a strong fit in the Grizzlies’ backcourt rotation. While he may initially play limited minutes, Small has the tools and mindset to develop into a valuable contributor at the next level.
For WVU, Small’s draft selection is a testament to the program’s ability to develop talent and prepare players for the NBA. Head coach Darian DeVries praised Small’s work ethic and leadership, stating, “He’s the kind of player who elevates everyone around him. Memphis is getting a competitor.”
As he embarks on his NBA journey, RaeQuan “Small” Battle carries with him the pride of Mountaineer Nation — and the hopes of making a lasting impact in th
e league.
