The Future of Matt Rhule at Nebraska Will Be Decided in Year 3

Matt Rhule’s tenure at Nebraska has always been about the long game. Year 1 was about tearing things down, Year 2 about laying the foundation, but Year 3? That’s the season where excuses run out and expectations become reality. If Nebraska is ever going to return to national relevance, Rhule must prove in Year 3 that his methodical rebuild can translate into actual success.

Why Year 3?

History tells us that elite coaches turn the corner by their third season. Look at Nick Saban at Alabama (12-2 in Year 2, national champs in Year 3), Kirby Smart at Georgia (SEC champs in Year 2, national title contenders in Year 3), and Jim Harbaugh at Michigan (double-digit wins by Year 3). If Rhule is truly the guy, Nebraska needs to be contending for a Big Ten Championship—or at least sniffing it—by the end of Year 3.

What Needs to Happen?

By now, Rhule will have his players, his system, and no excuses. A few key things must align for Nebraska to make the leap:

  1. Quarterback Stability – The program has been plagued by inconsistency at QB. Year 3 must have a leader under center who can execute Rhule’s vision.
  2. Defensive Growth – Nebraska’s defense showed flashes, but Year 3 must bring dominance, especially in the trenches.
  3. Signature Wins – Beating Michigan, Ohio State, or Penn State isn’t just a dream—it’s a requirement for national credibility.

The Controversy: What If He Fails?

Nebraska fans are patient but not endlessly so. If Rhule’s third season ends in another six- or seven-win campaign, the “hot seat” talk will be deafening. The Big Ten is only getting tougher with USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington joining. Falling behind now means falling behind forever.

Conclusion

Year 3 isn’t just another season—it’s the season. Either Nebraska takes a leap forward, or Rhule’s tenure starts looking eerily similar to those who came before him. Success, or the beginning of the end—one way or another, 2026 will decide Matt Rhule’s fate.
