Why Duke’s Cooper Flagg embraces comparisons to Celtics legend Larry Bird,Here’s Why

Cooper Flagg, a freshman sensation at Duke University, has rapidly ascended the ranks of college basketball, drawing parallels to NBA legend Larry Bird. These comparisons, while flattering, are embraced by Flagg as reflections of his admiration for Bird’s style rather than direct aspirations to emulate him.

Origins of the Comparison

The analogy between Flagg and Bird gained prominence following comments by Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim. Boeheim noted, “I think he is almost – to me, he’s [Larry] Bird-like, a little bit. Except he’s, you know, quicker, faster, more athletic; he doesn’t shoot (the ball) as well, but his shot is coming.”

This assessment highlights Flagg’s versatility and athleticism, qualities that have become his trademarks. However, Flagg maintains a grounded perspective on such comparisons. He acknowledges the influence of Bird’s Celtics, particularly their ball movement, stating, “I just think the way that they move the ball was really fascinating to me at a young age.”

Flagg’s Unique Skill Set

While the Bird comparison is flattering, Flagg’s game is distinctively his own. Standing at 6’9″ and weighing 205 pounds, he combines size with agility, enabling him to impact various facets of the game. His scoring, rebounding, and playmaking abilities have been instrumental in Duke’s success, leading the team in multiple statistical categories. His defensive prowess further sets him apart, earning him recognition as one of the most well-rounded players in college basketball.

Embracing the Legacy

Growing up in Maine, Flagg was immersed in the legacy of Larry Bird. He recalls watching Bird’s games during long AAU road trips, which instilled an appreciation for unselfish play and team dynamics. This early exposure has influenced Flagg’s approach to the game, emphasizing passing and team cohesion.

Looking Ahead

As Flagg continues to develop his game, the parallels to Bird may evolve. However, Flagg remains focused on his unique path, leveraging the lessons learned from Bird’s era to inform his style. His journey reflects a blend of honoring basketball history while forging an individual legacy.
