Why Cooper Flagg ‘didn’t really want to answer the phone?’ when Duke first called to recruit him

Why Cooper Flagg ‘Didn’t Really Want to Answer the Phone’ When Duke First Called to Recruit Him

Cooper Flagg, one of the most highly touted basketball recruits in the country, has undoubtedly had his fair share of recruitment calls from some of the biggest programs in college basketball. However, when Duke first reached out, Flagg had a surprisingly honest reaction: he didn’t really want to answer the phone.

In an era where college basketball recruits are often eager to hear from elite programs, Flagg’s response to Duke’s initial call raised eyebrows. The 6’8” forward, widely regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2025 class, explained that his initial hesitation came from a deep-rooted loyalty to his family and a sense of comfort in his roots. While many players dream of playing for programs like Duke, Flagg’s journey has always been more about staying true to his own identity than chasing the bright lights of the biggest stage.

Flagg admitted that he was initially uncertain about hearing from Duke because he had a strong connection to other programs, particularly those that had been in his corner since he was a young prospect. Having grown up in a basketball family, Flagg’s father, who played at a smaller school, and his upbringing in the world of basketball had made him hesitant about the overwhelming attention that comes with playing for a blue-blood program like Duke.

“I didn’t really want to answer the phone at first,” Flagg said. “It’s just that Duke is such a huge program, and honestly, I wasn’t sure if it was the right fit for me. I had a lot of respect for Coach K and the program, but I just wasn’t sure if that was where I wanted to go yet.”

While Flagg’s reservations were understandable, Duke’s relentless recruiting efforts ultimately paid off. After his initial hesitation, the Duke coaching staff, led by head coach Jon Scheyer, continued to reach out and build a connection with the young star. The personal relationship they developed with Flagg and the vision they shared for his development on and off the court eventually won him over.

As Flagg considered his options, he found himself drawn to Duke not only because of its storied tradition and winning culture but also because of the opportunity to grow as both a player and a person. “Once I started talking to the coaches more and getting to know the program, I realized how much they could help me become the best version of myself,” Flagg explained. “It wasn’t just about basketball—it was about preparing me for the next level and making sure I was ready for whatever comes next.”

Ultimately, Flagg’s decision to choose Duke wasn’t based solely on the allure of playing for one of the most prestigious programs in college basketball history. It was about finding a program where he felt he could thrive, both as a player and as an individual. His decision has already made waves in the basketball world, as many believe Flagg is a future NBA star.

Looking back, Flagg now laughs at his initial reluctance to answer the phone. “I guess I was just being a little hesitant,” he admitted. “But now I know I made the right choice, and I’m excited to get started.”

Cooper Flagg’s story serves as a reminder that even the most highly coveted prospects approach their decision-making process with caution and care. His journey to Duke may have started with hesitation, but it’s clear that he’s found the perfect fit for his next chapter, and fans are eagerly anticipating what’s next for this future superstar.
