Draft expert just spotlighted Cam Ward’s ex-teammate as a camp breakout.
The Tennessee Titans have their franchise quarterback, or at least that’s what the hope is after spending the first overall pick on Miami’s Cam Ward. For Ward to succeed, the Titans have to build around him and, as of this writing, the wide receiver position looks mostly meh.
Tennessee brought in Tyler Lockett and Van Jefferson and they’ll be the likely starters alongside Calvin Ridley for his second season in Nashville. Behind those three, the Titans spent a pair of fourth-round picks on Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike, both of whom feel like locks to make the roster. Former draft bust Treylon Burks is in the mix as well.
So, who gets the last spot(s)?
A name that Titans fans are probably becoming more aware of is Xavier Restrepo, who played with Ward during the quarterback’s lone season with the Hurricanes. Restrepo put together the best season of his college career with Ward as his quarterback, tallying 69 receptions for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns with 93.9 yards per game.
Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network listed Restrepo as a UDFA that he feels comfortable making the 53-man roster and, considering everything I mentioned above, it’s not hard to see why.Draft guru just made Cam Ward’s former teammate a name to watch in camp
It gets a smidge “easier” for Restrepo to make the roster if Tennessee opts to keep seven receivers instead of six. That would allow the Titans to keep the three starters, the two fourth-round rookies, Burks, and then Restrepo could push for the seventh and final spot.
Having chemistry with Ward has to count for something and if the two pick up where they left off in camp, why wouldn’t the Miami wideout have a realistic shot at making the team? Wouldn’t the Titans rather gamble on him and Ward’s previous relationship than continue trying to make it work with Burks?
Sometimes people throw out theories for UDFAs and why they can make it onto a roster but Restrepo has a pretty darn good case as to why he should stick on the Titans’ final roster. Now let’s see how he does this summer.
