Where do Alabama’s football position groups stand entering key week of spring?…….

As the Alabama Crimson Tide progress through a pivotal week of spring practice, each position group is under scrutiny, with competitions intensifying and new talents emerging.

Quarterbacks: Following Jalen Milroe’s departure for the NFL, the starting quarterback role is up for grabs. Redshirt sophomore Ty Simpson, with his tenure in the program, appears to be the frontrunner. However, true freshman Keelon Russell, a five-star recruit, is making a compelling case with his confidence and skill set. The coaching staff faces a challenging decision in balancing experience against raw talent.

Wide Receivers: The receiving corps has undergone significant transformation. Sophomore Ryan Williams, who dazzled as a true freshman, is expected to lead the group. Washington transfer Germie Bernard provides a reliable target, having delivered consistent performances last season. Miami transfer Isaiah Horton adds size and experience, potentially filling the “big slot” role. The development of Jalen Hale, returning from an ACL injury, and the possible position switch of former five-star cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe to receiver, add intriguing dynamics to this group.

Linebackers: Despite the loss of projected first-round pick Jihaad Campbell, the linebacker unit remains formidable. Deontae Lawson’s return for a fifth year, following a season-ending injury, brings leadership and talent. Justin Jefferson, benefiting from an extra year of eligibility, and Colorado transfer Nikhai Hill-Green, an All-Big 12 second-teamer, bolster the group’s depth. The emergence of young talents like Cayden Jones and incoming freshmen Darrell “Duke” Johnson and Luke Metz will be critical in maintaining the unit’s dominance.

Defensive Backs: The secondary is poised to be a team strength. Returning starters Domani Jackson and Zabien Brown provide stability at cornerback. Utah transfer Cam Calhoun introduces experience and competition. Freshman Dijon Lee, noted for his exceptional length and physicality, is already turning heads in practice. The safety positions, anchored by Keon Sabb and Bray Hubbard, offer a blend of experience and versatility.

Offensive Line: The offensive front is in a state of flux, with several players transferring out and new recruits coming in. Notably, Alabama has secured commitments from top offensive line prospects, including five-star recruits Michael Carroll and Ty Haywood, as well as four-star talents like Micah DeBose. DeBose, standing 6’5″ and weighing 315 pounds, has demonstrated versatility and skill during the Under Armour All-America Game practices, indicating potential for early contribution.

As the Crimson Tide navigate these positional battles, the coaching staff’s decisions during this critical spring period will shape the team’s trajectory for the upcoming season.
