What’s Next for The Locksmith?
After a strong 2024-25 campaign, Haywood Highsmith—known around Heat Nation as “The Locksmith”—is set to return to Miami for the final year of his team-friendly two-year, $10.8 million deal. With Caleb Martin departing in free agency, Highsmith’s value as a defensive wing became even more essential. The Heat prioritized continuity and versatility, and keeping Highsmith was a no-brainer.
In 74 games this past season, Highsmith averaged 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and shot a solid 38.2% from three. While not eye-popping numbers, his impact goes well beyond the stat sheet. Erik Spoelstra deployed him in various roles—starting at power forward for much of the season before shifting to the bench when rookie Kel’el Ware emerged. Regardless of role, Highsmith gave Miami reliable defense and spacing.
Looking ahead to 2025-26, Highsmith will continue serving as a key rotation piece. His perimeter defense, energy, and ability to guard multiple positions are vital to the Heat’s identity. At just over $5 million next season, his contract gives the team flexibility, especially if bigger roster moves are considered. Still, Miami values his consistency and fit within Spoelstra’s system.
Highsmith will look to raise his three-point percentage closer to the 40% mark while tightening up his individual defense against quicker players. Though he’s not expected to be a major scorer, some increased offensive aggression and playmaking could elevate his role further.
In a league that values two-way wings, Highsmith fits the mold perfectly—low maintenance, high effort, and dependable. Whether starting or coming off the bench, The Locksmith will continue to secure Miami’s perimeter and provide critical minutes in high-leverage situations. As always, don’t expect flash—but do expect locked-in, winning basketball.
