In the world of college marching bands, few have achieved the legendary status of West Virginia University’s Mountaineer Marching Band, affectionately known as “The Pride of West Virginia.” With a rich history dating back to 1901, this 340-member ensemble has captivated audiences nationwide with its high-energy performances, intricate musical arrangements, and dynamic visual presentations.
Their reputation for excellence was solidified in 1997 when they received the prestigious Sudler Trophy from the John Philip Sousa Foundation, an honor often likened to the Heisman Trophy for college marching bands. This accolade recognized not just a single outstanding performance but a tradition of excellence spanning years.
Beyond college football stadiums, “The Pride” has showcased its talents on some of the nation’s biggest stages. Notably, they have performed in over 16 different NFL and professional sports team stadiums since 1970, including appearances at Pittsburgh Steelers games at both Three Rivers Stadium and Heinz Field.
Their national prominence was further highlighted with performances at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, one of the most-watched events in the country. After a memorable appearance in 2016, the band was invited back for the 2024 parade, joining an elite group of bands selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide.
Under the direction of Dr. Cheldon Williams, the Mountaineer Marching Band continues to uphold its legacy of excellence, representing West Virginia University and the state with pride and distinction.
