Chelsea will undoubtedly be regretting not signing Mexican midfield star Edson Alvarez given his performances for West Ham this season.

El Machin has been a revelation for the Hammers. But he could have been playing for rivals Chelsea had a deal agreed with Ajax not collapsed the summer before.

Now the Blues could regret missing out on West Ham star Alvarez for another reason.

Because West Ham have a secret weapon in the battle with Chelsea for brilliant striker Santiago Gimenez.

West Ham and Chelsea are both in the market for a striker in the January transfer window.

According to the likes of HITC and a host of other outlets, the London rivals are very much interested in Feyenoord’s 21-goal star Gimenez.

Historically West Ham might struggle to beat the likes of Chelsea to signings.

The Hammers have closed that transfer gap in recent seasons.

Agent Alvarez

But Chelsea still have the financial muscle – especially when it comes to wages – to win most transfer duels.

Gimenez has opened up about moving on from Dutch football amid the links to West Ham and Chelsea, stating he is open to a move away as long as Feyenoord get the right price for him.

David Moyes could have a trump card over Mauricio Pochettino in the shape of that man Alvarez, though.

The pair have forged a close friendship and play in the Mexico national team together – winning the Gold Cup last year.

Hammers trump card?

Moyes will undoubtedly be putting ‘Agent Alvarez’ to work on Gimenez.

Alvarez gave West Ham a glowing reference to his former Ajax teammate Mohammed Kudus when the Hammers moved to reunite them in east London in the summer.

So it would not be the first time the Scot has used one of his players to grease the wheels on a transfer having previously sought Tomas Soucek’s input in signing Vladimir Coufal.

West Ham fans will be hoping Alvarez can be as instrumental off the pitch as he is on it as they battle to beat Chelsea to his international teammate.
