The San Antonio Spurs entered the 2023-24 season as the youngest team in the NBA.
Fronted by rookie “alien” Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs embraced their youth heading into this season. San Antonio played a season full of highlights and athleticism galore, fueled by a young core making plays, though it was clear that the team was missing pieces to truly make a push at something special.
The most significant missing component was probably a point guard to pass the ball to Devin Vassell and Wembanyama, two players with extremely potent offensive arsenals. The Spurs experimented with a variety of lineups, choosing to start power forward Jeremy Sochan in the first game of the campaign.
It wouldn’t last long, though, as he and many of the other guard lineups the Spurs attempted were unable to provide the caliber of guard play necessary for the development of the young club.
Fortunately, The Spurs have a good chance of selecting a top-5 pick in June from the NBA Draft Lottery, which gives them the opportunity to solve their guard problem.
Rob Dillingham, a point guard from Kentucky, was predicted to be selected by the Spurs in a recent ESPN mock draft. At just nineteen years old, Dillingham would blend right in with San Antonio’s youthful core. This year, he was a freshman. Last season, he only made one start for the Wildcats, but he still managed to score an incredible 15 points, dish out four assists, and record a 23average minutes per game.
The Spurs, who selected Sochan in the lottery after he played reserve for Baylor during his last college season, would be familiar with this situation.
A San Antonio squad in dire need of a competent guard player and someone who can lead an offense that leaks points would love to have Dillingham on board. With the ball in his hands, Dillingham is an explosive scorer who can create for himself and his teammates.
