Rick Barnes Previews Vols’ Big Bounce-Back Opportunity Against Florida After Devastating Kentucky Loss
Rick Barnes, head coach of the No. 8 Tennessee basketball team, spoke to the media on Friday about the Vols’ performance following their loss to No. 12 Kentucky, as they prepare to face No. 5 Florida on Saturday afternoon.
The game will take place at Thompson-Boling Arena, with tipoff scheduled for 12 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Florida delivered Tennessee its most significant loss of the Rick Barnes era earlier this season with a 73-43 victory in Gainesville, marking UT’s first defeat after starting the season 14-0.
The upcoming game will be Tennessee’s fourth consecutive matchup against a ranked team and the fifth straight home game against a top-tier opponent.
When asked about the team’s mentality following two tough losses, Barnes emphasized that the players are sticking to their process and doing what they are asked to do.
Despite the losses, he highlighted the importance of growth, both individually and as a team. He pointed out that each of their four losses has come against a ranked opponent, underscoring the high level of competition.
Barnes noted that the team must remain diligent, acknowledging that no game is guaranteed, especially if the team doesn’t put in the necessary effort to win.
Barnes also discussed what Tennessee needs to do differently to avoid a repeat of the 30-point loss in Gainesville. He stressed that winning comes down to basics like rebounding, ball security, and making shots.
However, he pointed out that Tennessee’s ability to stay competitive when shots aren’t falling is crucial. Defensively, Barnes emphasized the need to limit fast breaks and secure rebounds while taking care of the basketball.
As for offensive struggles, Barnes explained that the team must adjust when defenses sag off the three-point line. While making shots is the ideal solution, he emphasized the importance of ball movement, creating driving lanes, and keeping the defense on its toes.
He also expressed frustration over the team’s inability to capitalize on open shots, specifically referencing 33 uncontested misses in their recent game.
Barnes was asked whether Tennessee is too dependent on the three-point shot, and he rejected that notion, pointing to the team’s balanced offense.
However, he acknowledged that when shots aren’t falling, teams tend to pack the paint, limiting post play. He stressed the importance of focusing on improvement and not succumbing to panic, despite the losses.
Looking ahead, Barnes expressed hope that sophomore forward Cade Phillips and other players like Felix Okpara and Igor Milicic Jr. could contribute more offensively, noting that the team would benefit from a collective effort.
He also praised Darlinstone Dubar for his defensive intensity and aggression against Kentucky, highlighting that players don’t need to score to remain on the floor if they contribute in other ways.
When discussing the team’s mindset since the loss to Kentucky, Barnes praised the players’ positive attitude and commitment. He also mentioned that freshman guard Bishop Boswell earned more playing time through hard work and strong effort, indicating that he could see more minutes moving forward.
As for the status of Zakai Zeigler, Barnes stated that Zeigler did not practice on Thursday but expressed confidence that the guard would be ready to play. He also emphasized that the team’s guards need to do their part in rebounding against a Florida team that poses challenges on the boards.
Ultimately, Barnes is focused on continuous improvement, as he looks to guide the team to be at its best by the end of the season. Despite the setbacks, he remains optimistic and determined to keep working toward the team’s goals.
