Virginia Transfer Star Henry Ford Commits to Tennessee Baseball
Tennessee baseball just added a major piece to its 2025 roster, as standout Virginia transfer Henry Ford has officially committed to join the Volunteers. The former Cavaliers slugger, known for his power at the plate and versatility in the field, brings instant experience and depth to an already potent Tennessee lineup. The move further solidifies Tony Vitello’s program as one of the premier destinations for elite talent in the transfer portal.
Ford, a redshirt sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, announced his decision via social media on Saturday, thanking the Virginia program for his development while expressing excitement for what’s ahead in Knoxville.
> “Grateful for my time in Charlottesville and everything the University of Virginia gave me,” Ford wrote. “With that said, I’m thrilled to announce I’m committing to Tennessee to continue my baseball journey. Let’s get to work.”
The right-handed hitter had a breakout season in 2024, batting .323 with 14 home runs, 46 RBIs, and a .593 slugging percentage. He played both third base and corner outfield for the Cavaliers and was widely regarded as one of the most dangerous bats in the ACC. His combination of plate discipline and raw power drew attention from pro scouts, and many expected him to be a top transfer target if he entered the portal — which he did in early June.
Tennessee wasted no time pursuing Ford. With the departures of key players to the MLB Draft and graduation, head coach Tony Vitello made it clear the Vols would remain aggressive in the transfer portal to maintain their championship aspirations. Ford’s addition is a prime example of that strategy paying off.
“Henry is the type of player who makes your whole lineup better,” one source close to the program said. “He’s got SEC-level pop, plays the game the right way, and has been through deep postseason runs. He fits right into what we’re building.”
Indeed, Ford’s postseason experience with Virginia will be invaluable. He played a major role in the Cavaliers’ 2024 Super Regional run, providing clutch hitting and leadership in pressure-packed moments. That kind of poise will be crucial for a Tennessee team that continues to chase its first national title despite consistent appearances in Omaha.
Ford’s versatility also gives Tennessee flexibility defensively. With open spots at third base and left field heading into 2025, Vitello and his staff can plug Ford in wherever needed while maximizing his offensive output.
For Ford, the decision to transfer came down to fit, opportunity, and a chance to play in the SEC — widely considered the nation’s top college baseball conference.
> “I wanted to test myself at the highest level and compete for a national title,” he said. “Tennessee gives me that shot.”
As the Volunteers continue to reload for another deep postseason run, adding a proven talent like Henry Ford is yet another reminder that Tennessee baseball is not just thriving — it’s becoming a transfer destination of choice.
