Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen is departing for Ohio State, where he will take on the role of offensive line coach. Bowen, a native of Helena, Georgia, has had a diverse coaching career, beginning as a student assistant at Maryland before making stops at Towson, Penn State, Fordham, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He joined Virginia Tech in 2022 as the offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, later shifting to quarterback coach in 2023.
While Bowen’s tenure at Virginia Tech was marked by both promising players and struggles—particularly on the offensive line and due to injuries—his departure leaves head coach Brent Pry in need of a new offensive coordinator. Pry’s search for Bowen’s replacement comes amid recent staff changes, including the hiring of Sam Siefkes as defensive coordinator. The timing of Bowen’s exit is not ideal for the Hokies, but Pry now faces the challenge of filling two key coaching positions.
Bowen’s move to Ohio State marks a return to coaching the offensive line, an area in which he has had success. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech’s next offensive coordinator will inherit a team with significant potential but also a number of challenges to address.
