Virginia Tech’s football program has bolstered its defensive lineup by securing a commitment from James Djonkam, a versatile linebacker and defensive end from Eastern Michigan University.
This addition marks the Hokies’ third commitment of the day, following the acquisitions of offensive tackle Lucas Austin from West Virginia and defensive tackle Arias Nash from Mercer.
Djonkam, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 250 pounds, hails from Springfield, Virginia, and is a product of West Springfield High School. His collegiate journey began at Independence Community College in Kansas, where he showcased his defensive prowess. He then transferred to Arizona State University, spending two seasons with the Sun Devils before moving to Eastern Michigan for the 2024 season.
During his tenure at Eastern Michigan, Djonkam had a standout season, recording 98 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks. His impressive performance earned him second-team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) honors. Notably, he was among the top tacklers in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), ranking 11th nationally. His contributions were further recognized through multiple conference defensive player of the week awards.
Djonkam’s decision to join Virginia Tech was influenced by his desire to return to his home state for his final year of eligibility. He chose the Hokies over other programs, including West Virginia and Michigan State. At Virginia Tech, he is expected to play as an edge rusher, a role that aligns with his skill set and the team’s defensive strategies. This position will allow him to potentially fill the void left by All-American Antwaun Powell-Ryland, who previously held a similar role.
The addition of Djonkam brings experience and depth to the Hokies’ defensive line. His collegiate career has been marked by adaptability and consistent performance across multiple programs and levels of competition. His return to Virginia not only strengthens the team’s roster but also underscores Virginia Tech’s commitment to attracting talent with local roots.
Head coach Brent Pry and his staff have been active in the transfer portal, with Djonkam becoming the 14th player to join the Hokies since the portal opened. This strategic approach aims to address key positional needs and enhance the team’s competitiveness for the upcoming season. The coaching staff continues to seek additional talent, particularly focusing on areas such as the defensive and offensive lines, as well as the wide receiver position.
Djonkam’s commitment is a testament to Virginia Tech’s proactive recruitment efforts and their focus on building a robust and dynamic defensive unit. As the Hokies prepare for the 2025 season, the integration of experienced players like Djonkam is expected to contribute significantly to the team’s performance and aspirations.
In summary, the acquisition of James Djonkam represents a strategic enhancement to Virginia Tech’s defense, bringing in a player with proven talent, versatility, and a strong connection to the state of Virginia. His presence is anticipated to make an immediate impact as the Hokies aim to strengthen their defensive front in the forthcoming season.
