The experienced Dutch centre-back struggled to deal with a bouncing ball while battling Fulham attacker Raul Jimenez.
As a result, Pereira sneaks in behind and passes the ball to former Chelsea and Arsenal forward Willian.
He then takes a deft touch and slots the ball between Van Dijk’s legs to put Fulham ahead.
At halftime, Jamie Redknapp informed Sky Sports that Virgil Van Dyk made the error, which was unusual for him.
‘I’ve always considered that if you’re a centre-back and the ball comes into your area and you’re unsure, head the ball towards the touchline, and he sort of heads it infield.
Pereira then seizes the opportunity and returns it to Willian, who performs admirably. He’s afraid of tackling and loses his balance, but Willian does what he does best: he almost hurdles him, manages to keep his feet there, vaults over him, and then slides it through Virgil Van Dyk’s legs.
‘It’s a fantastic play. It was truly what they deserved. They’ve been wonderful.
During the game, a Sky Sports analyst stated: “There’s still a lot of work for Fulham to do.” If there is one individual you want at the end, it’s Willian.
‘Some beautiful moves, but Van Dijk misjudges and has his pocket picked. The objective was to sit deep and strike them when they had a chance, and they succeeded.
‘It’s a big aim that offers them something to hold onto.’
