Vikings RB Ty Chandler Poised for Breakout Season in 2025

Ty Chandler, the Minnesota Vikings’ young running back, is drawing significant buzz heading into the 2024 season. After a strong finish to the 2023 campaign, Chandler has positioned himself as the front-runner to take over lead-back duties following the team’s decision to move on from veteran Alexander Mattison.
Chandler, a 2022 fifth-round pick out of North Carolina, flashed explosive potential last season, averaging 4.5 yards per carry and proving to be a reliable weapon in both the running and passing game. His combination of speed, vision, and agility was on full display late in the year, including a breakout 132-yard game against the Bengals in Week 15.
With the departure of Mattison and no major additions at running back during the offseason, the Vikings are signaling their confidence in Chandler to take on a larger role. Head coach Kevin O’Connell praised his development during OTAs: “Ty’s come back stronger, smarter, and more focused. He’s ready to take that next step.”
The coaching staff has been particularly impressed with Chandler’s improved pass protection and his ability to pick up blitzes—an essential trait in O’Connell’s offense. In addition, Chandler’s work with new quarterback J.J. McCarthy has already shown signs of chemistry, especially on screen plays and check-downs during team drills.
Vikings fans should be excited about Chandler’s potential. He not only brings a dynamic rushing style but also adds versatility in the passing game, giving the offense another dimension. If he stays healthy and continues to develop at this pace, Chandler could emerge as one of the NFL’s surprise breakout stars in 2024.
With a young QB under center and an evolving offensive identity, Chandler’s impact could be a key factor in Minnesota’s success this season.
