BYU Legend Paul Lasike Retires as A Warrior On and Off the Field
Paul Lasike, one of the most physically imposing and mentally resolute athletes to ever wear a BYU jersey, has officially announced his retirement from professional sports. The former rugby standout turned football fullback made his mark not only through bruising runs and bone-rattling blocks, but also through a journey defined by faith, resilience, and leadership. As his playing career concludes, Lasike leaves behind a legacy that transcends stats, rooted in grit and service.
Born in New Zealand and raised in Auckland, Lasike’s path to BYU was anything but traditional. Initially recruited for his rugby talent, he made a bold switch to American football while attending Brigham Young University. Despite having never played the sport before, Lasike adapted quickly, using his rugby background to become a reliable fullback in BYU’s offense. Between 2012 and 2014, he played a crucial role in opening up the running game and was known for his physical presence on the field and quiet leadership off it.
Undrafted in 2015, Lasike signed with the Arizona Cardinals and later joined the Chicago Bears, making his NFL debut in 2016. Though his NFL tenure was brief, he made an impression with his toughness and unselfish play style—qualities that eventually brought him back to the sport where it all began: rugby.
Lasike returned to the rugby pitch with renewed purpose, joining the USA Eagles and eventually Major League Rugby’s Utah Warriors and later the Harlequins in England. Representing the United States at the international level, he became a cornerstone of the U.S. national team and participated in several global tournaments. His blend of brute strength and refined skill made him a fearsome opponent and an invaluable teammate.
Beyond the field, Lasike’s story has always been defined by more than athleticism. A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lasike served a two-year mission in Alabama before embarking on his sports career. His faith remained central to his journey, guiding him through challenges, injuries, and transitions between sports and continents. Known for his humility, Lasike often credited his family and spiritual grounding for his success.
In announcing his retirement, Lasike shared a heartfelt message on social media: “It’s been an incredible ride—from BYU to the NFL, from international rugby to England. I’ve been blessed beyond measure. Thank you to every coach, teammate, and supporter who’s been part of this journey. Time to close this chapter and start the next.”
Now 34, Lasike plans to focus on his family and community, and has hinted at a future in coaching or mentoring young athletes. His retirement may signal the end of his time in uniform, but for those who watched him play or stood beside him in the locker room, Paul Lasike will always be remembered as a warrior—in every sense of the word.
