Union Berlin has officially received the green light for the long-awaited expansion of their iconic Stadion An der Alten Försterei — but with a key restriction: the total capacity will be capped at 34,500 seats. The approval marks a major step forward in the club’s ambition to modernize its facilities while preserving the unique fan-driven spirit that defines the Köpenick-based team.
Originally, Union Berlin had envisioned a slightly larger capacity, but local planning authorities imposed limits due to environmental and infrastructural concerns, including noise control and transport capacity in the surrounding residential area. Despite the cap, the project will still represent a significant upgrade from the current 22,000 capacity, ensuring more supporters can experience Bundesliga football in one of Germany’s most atmospheric venues.
The expansion will include improved seating arrangements, modern hospitality sections, enhanced accessibility for disabled fans, and updated media and VIP facilities. Sustainability has also been placed at the heart of the design, with energy-efficient lighting, eco-friendly materials, and better waste management systems integrated into the construction plans.
Union Berlin’s rise from the lower divisions to consistent Bundesliga and European competition has made the need for expansion increasingly urgent. The club’s supporters — famous for their passionate, hands-on involvement, including volunteering in previous renovation efforts — have eagerly awaited this development.
Club president Dirk Zingler expressed pride in the decision, noting that it balances growth with community responsibility. “This is a win for Union and for the neighborhood,” he said. “We’re building a future for our fans without losing our identity.”
Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with completion projected for 2028. Once finished, the upgraded Stadion An der Alten Försterei will stand as a symbol of Union’s steady rise and their enduring connection to Berlin’s footba
ll heart.
