LOS ANGELES (AP) – In a thrilling matchup at Pauley Pavilion, top-ranked UCLA overcame a fierce challenge from No. 8 Ohio State, defeating them 65-52 to extend their unbeaten streak to 22-0. After struggling early with Ohio State’s aggressive defense, the Bruins found their rhythm in the second half, pulling away with an 18-1 run in the final quarter.
UCLA, which has now secured three wins against top-10 teams this season, had to dig deep to respond to the tough, full-court press by Ohio State that forced the Bruins into 14 turnovers in the first half. Despite leading by as many as 11 points, UCLA went into the fourth quarter with just a narrow two-point advantage.
Gabriela Jaquez was key in the fourth, scoring nine points, while Kiki Rice added eight. Jaquez, who had only two points in the first half, was more aggressive in the second, with her strong performance helping extend the lead to 18 points with 3:16 remaining. Lauren Betts led the charge with 19 points and 14 rebounds, continuing her dominant play in the paint.
The Bruins’ defense was a major factor, limiting the high-scoring Buckeyes to just 52 points on 29.4% shooting, far below their average of 81.6 points per game. UCLA also dominated the boards, outrebounding Ohio State 49-33, with Betts contributing a team-high 14 rebounds to secure her 12th double-double of the season.
Coach Cori Close praised her team’s resilience, saying that they responded to adversity and showed toughness, especially in the fourth quarter. UCLA’s ability to lock down defensively and execute in clutch moments proved vital as they remained the only unbeaten team in Division I.
Looking ahead, UCLA’s unbeaten streak will continue to be tested, but the Bruins have shown they are ready for whatever challenges come their way.
