UCLA Coach Explains Decision to Sign Nico Iamaleava After Departure From Tennessee

UCLA Coach Deshaun Foster Explains Decision to Sign Nico Iamaleava After Tennessee Departure

In a bold move aimed at revitalizing UCLA’s football program, head coach Deshaun Foster has secured the commitment of former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava. The decision comes after Iamaleava entered the transfer portal following a dispute over his name, image, and likeness (NIL) compensation with the Volunteers. Foster, recognizing both the challenges and opportunities presented by Iamaleava’s availability, has embraced the quarterback’s arrival as a pivotal step in the Bruins’ resurgence.

Iamaleava, a Southern California native, was a five-star recruit who initially chose Tennessee, enticed by an $8 million NIL deal. During the 2024 season, he threw for 2,616 yards and 19 touchdowns, leading the Volunteers to a 10-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance. However, tensions arose over NIL compensation, leading to his departure from the program.

Foster addressed concerns about Iamaleava’s transfer, stating, “We understand the complexities of today’s college football landscape, especially regarding NIL. Our focus is on providing Nico with a supportive environment where he can thrive both on and off the field.” He emphasized that the decision to bring in Iamaleava was based on his talent, leadership qualities, and potential fit within UCLA’s offensive scheme.

The Bruins are entering their first season in the Big Ten Conference after a disappointing 5-7 record last year. Iamaleava joins a quarterback room that includes senior Ethan Garbers, who threw for 2,727 yards with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and Appalachian State transfer Joey Aguilar, who amassed 6,740 yards and 56 touchdowns over two seasons. Foster believes that Iamaleava’s addition will foster healthy competition and elevate the team’s performance.
