Tyler Bowen to Join Ohio State as Offensive Line Coach, Reportedly Also Taking Run Game Coordinator Role

Ohio State is set to bring in Tyler Bowen as its new offensive line coach, according to multiple reports. Bowen, who has been Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator for the past three seasons, will succeed Justin Frye in the role and is expected to take on additional responsibilities as the team’s run game coordinator.

Bowen, a former Maryland offensive lineman, has had a diverse coaching career. He served as Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator and tight ends coach in 2022 and 2023, as well as quarterbacks coach for the Hokies over the last two years. Before his time at Virginia Tech, Bowen spent one season coaching tight ends with the Jacksonville Jaguars under Urban Meyer and also had a successful stint at Penn State, where he was an assistant coach and co-offensive coordinator in 2020.

Bowen’s recruiting experience includes roles as Penn State’s recruiting coordinator, where he helped secure key players like All-American Olu Fashanu and tight end Tyler Warren. He also previously coached offensive lines at Maryland and Fordham.

This move brings valuable offensive coordinator experience to Ohio State’s staff, which is still searching for a new offensive coordinator after Chip Kelly’s departure. Brian Hartline, the current wide receivers coach, is the leading candidate for the role, and there’s speculation that offensive analyst Billy Fessler could be promoted to the quarterbacks coach position. Additionally, Ohio State continues its search for a defensive coordinator following Jim Knowles’ decision to join Penn State.
