Detmer played quarterback for BYU from 1987 to 1991, becoming the face of the program during that era. His standout season came in 1990 when he threw for 5,188 yards and 41 touchdowns, earning him the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and Davey O’Brien Award. He led the Cougars to a memorable 28–21 victory over the top-ranked Miami Hurricanes, a game that solidified his status as a national star.
Detmer set numerous NCAA records during his tenure, including career passing yards and total offense. He was a two-time consensus All-American and remains BYU’s all-time leader in several passing categories.
