Tiger Woods’ return to competitive golf was cut short on Friday afternoon. After playing just six holes in round two of the Genesis Invitational, the 15-time major winner was carted off the course and forced to withdraw from the tournament to which he also plays host.
Following much speculation as to whether Woods’ back was once again acting up, it was revealed by Rob McNamara, EVP of TGR Ventures, that he was dealing with an acute illness and flu-like symptoms. While Woods didn’t speak to the media following his withdrawal, he released a statement via X on Saturday afternoon confirming that he is dealing with a case of the flu.
While it’s disappointing for Woods and golf fans who were hopeful to see him playing this weekend, this seems to be the best-case scenario. Considering the alternative reasons that could’ve led to a withdrawal, a bout of the flu shouldn’t impact Woods’ season long-term. We’ll likely see the golf legend back in the mix presumably at The Players Championship next month.
