This Day in FSU History: Aguayo’s Late Field Goal Secures Perfect ACC Record for Seminoles

On this day in Florida State history, Roberto Aguayo etched his name in Seminole lore with a clutch field goal that sealed a dramatic victory and a perfect ACC record for the team. The moment came on November 23, 2013, when the Seminoles faced Boston College in a hard-fought battle that highlighted their resilience and championship pedigree.

The Seminoles entered the game undefeated in ACC play, aiming to complete a spotless conference campaign en route to a national championship bid. Despite their dominance throughout the season, Boston College proved to be a formidable opponent, pushing FSU to the limit in a nail-biting contest.

Aguayo, the Seminoles’ star kicker and a future Lou Groza Award winner, rose to the occasion in the game’s waning moments. With the score tied and the pressure mounting, Aguayo confidently drilled a 44-yard field goal, giving FSU a 20-17 lead and ultimately securing the victory. His poise under pressure epitomized the Seminoles’ ability to deliver in crucial moments.

The win marked Florida State’s first perfect ACC regular-season record since the early 2000s and set the stage for their historic run to the 2013 BCS National Championship. It also underscored Aguayo’s importance to the team, as his accuracy and reliability became critical assets throughout the season.

Reflecting on the game, then-head coach Jimbo Fisher praised Aguayo’s nerves of steel. “Roberto is the kind of player you can count on when it matters most,” Fisher said. “He showed why he’s one of the best in the country.”

Aguayo’s game-winning kick remains a cherished moment in FSU history, symbolizing the Seminoles’ dominance during one of the most memorable seasons in college football.
