The University of Texas honored legendary running back Earl Campbell with a statue at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in 2006. The 9-foot-tall bronze statue stands near the walkway to the Moncrief-Neuhaus Athletic Center, serving as a lasting tribute to Campbell’s impact on the university’s football program. The dedication ceremony was attended by Campbell, his family, former coaches, and university officials. Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds remarked that every student-athlete would pass by the statue, symbolizing the values Campbell represented: dedication, academic commitment, and excellence on the field .
In addition to the statue, the university further honored Campbell by renaming the football field to Campbell-Williams Field in 2020, recognizing both Earl Campbell and fellow Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams. This change was made at the request of the Jamail family, who previously held the naming rights. The renaming reflects the university’s commitment to celebrating the achievements of its Black athletes and promoting diversity and inclusion on campus .
Earl Campbell, known as the “Tyler Rose,” won the Heisman Trophy in 1977 after a stellar season, rushing for 1,744 yards and 19 touchdowns. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Longhorns and football fans alike.
