The Unexpected Contribution of Freshman Elsa Lemmilä to Ohio State Women’s Basketball

Ohio State women’s basketball has struggled in recent seasons, particularly with their performance in the paint and rebounds. However, this year, the team has found an unexpected contributor in freshman Elsa Lemmilä. Standing at 6-foot-6, the Finnish center has quietly been making a significant impact, earning more playing time as she continues to recover from a torn ACL.

Lemmilä arrived at Ohio State after a long recovery from her injury, which kept her out of action for almost a year. She began playing after fully recovering in the fall, averaging 17 minutes per game in her first 11 games and even recording a double-double. However, as Big Ten play began, her minutes diminished, but Lemmilä’s performance started to turn around toward the end of January. Her standout performance came in a game against Maryland, where she registered four blocks and five rebounds. She followed that with nine rebounds in 22 minutes against Nebraska.

Lemmilä’s most recent performance was pivotal in Ohio State’s victory over Washington. In a key moment during the second quarter, Lemmilä helped shut down the Huskies’ inside game and played a crucial role in the Buckeyes’ 12-point run that gave them a lead. Her defense was outstanding, making crucial turnovers and showing exceptional attention to detail.

Ohio State’s head coach, Kevin McGuff, praised Lemmilä for her calming presence on the floor, noting that her execution on both ends of the court has been impressive for such a young player. While she continues to work on developing her offensive game, Lemmilä’s strong defense remains a vital part of the Buckeyes’ success. Her ability to shut down opponents and generate possessions for Ohio State has been a game-changer.

As Lemmilä’s confidence in her offense grows, she has the potential to become a double-double machine. Her defense, however, continues to be her strength, and it’s clear that she’s becoming a key player for the team. Senior Cotie McMahon expressed immense pride in Lemmilä’s progress, especially considering her recent injury and the adjustment to a new team. With continued support, Lemmilä’s growth will be a major asset to Ohio State moving forward.
