The Nittany Lions faced major changes this off-season—coaching shifts, transfers, and high expectations after a strong CFP appearance.

The Penn State Nittany Lions have experienced a transformative off-season since their appearance in the College Football Playoff (CFP), marked by significant changes, high-profile departures, and renewed expectations. While reaching the CFP marked a major milestone for the program, the aftermath has brought challenges and opportunities that will shape the trajectory of James Franklin’s team in the coming season.

One of the most notable storylines has been the shifting coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich was let go following inconsistent performances on that side of the ball, especially in key matchups against elite defenses. In response, Franklin brought in a new offensive mind with a vision geared toward modernizing Penn State’s attack. The move signals an urgent desire to elevate the team from CFP participant to legitimate national title contender. The new hire brings with him a pro-style, aggressive offense intended to better utilize the talent already on the roster—particularly quarterback Drew Allar, who is expected to take on a larger leadership role.

Allar, once hailed as one of the top quarterback recruits in the nation, now finds himself at the center of the Lions’ hopes. The sophomore showed flashes of brilliance during the past season, but the expectations are now sky-high. With the departure of several veteran offensive linemen and key skill players, Allar’s ability to adapt and lead will be crucial. A successful off-season of development could be the difference between another CFP berth and a step back.

Player movement has also defined the off-season. Like many top programs, Penn State has been both beneficiary and victim of the transfer portal. A few talented backups have transferred out in search of playing time, while Penn State has bolstered its depth with incoming transfers at positions of need—particularly in the secondary and wide receiver corps. One standout addition includes a former SEC receiver who is expected to make an immediate impact.

Defensively, Penn State remains in strong shape, despite losing a few stars to the NFL Draft. The front seven continues to be one of the most physical in the Big Ten, and several young players are poised to fill the voids left behind. Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz has committed to maintaining the aggressive, high-pressure scheme that defined the unit last season. The defense will likely be the foundation of the team’s identity, especially early in the season as the offense adjusts under new leadership.

Off the field, the program has enjoyed continued recruiting success. The 2025 class is shaping up to be one of the strongest under Franklin, with multiple blue-chip prospects committing in recent weeks. This momentum has reinforced confidence in the program’s long-term outlook, even amid immediate uncertainty.

Ultimately, the Nittany Lions’ off-season has been anything but quiet. From coaching changes and player turnover to renewed strategic focus, Penn State is clearly aiming higher than just CFP appearances. The coming season will reveal whether the changes pay off, but one thing is certain: the Nittany Lions are embracing the pressure and the promise of becoming one of college football’s true elite.
