Texas Tech football roster slims as four more players leave

The Texas Tech football program has experienced further roster adjustments as four additional players have departed the team. While the specific reasons for each departure have not been explicitly detailed by the program, these moves contribute to the ongoing reshaping of the Red Raiders’ roster heading into the 2025 season.

Among the departures are two offensive linemen who have medically retired. The loss of depth on the offensive line can present a challenge, particularly in terms of maintaining a strong and reliable front for the offense. The names of these players and the specifics of their medical situations have not been widely publicized.

Additionally, two other players have left the program for undisclosed reasons. These departures further contribute to the fluidity of college football rosters in the transfer portal era, where players may seek new opportunities for various personal or athletic reasons.

These four departures follow a period of significant activity for Texas Tech in the transfer portal. Head coach Joey McGuire and his staff have been aggressive in both adding and seeing players leave the program as they work to construct the roster for the upcoming season.

Texas Tech’s Transfer Portal Activity (as of May 1, 2025):

* Incoming Transfers: Texas Tech has been highly active in the transfer portal, securing commitments from a significant number of players. These additions aim to address specific needs on both sides of the ball and bring experience and talent to Lubbock. Some notable incoming transfers include:

* David Bailey (EDGE): A four-star transfer from Syracuse.

* Romello Height (EDGE): A four-star transfer from Georgia Tech.

* Reggie Virgil (WR): A four-star transfer from Miami (OH).

* Quinten Joyner (RB): A four-star transfer from USC.

* Micah Hudson (WR): A highly-touted receiver who initially entered the portal but has since announced his return to Texas Tech.

* Outgoing Transfers: Alongside the four recent departures, Texas Tech has also seen a number of players enter the transfer portal throughout the offseason. This is a common occurrence in modern college football as players seek better fits for their skills or playing time opportunities. Some notable outgoing transfers include:

* Joseph Adedire (EDGE): Transferred to NC State.

* Isaiah Crawford (EDGE).

* Dylan Shaw (IOL).

* Tyler Murray (IOL).

Impact on the 2025 Roster:

The recent departures will further necessitate the integration of the numerous incoming transfers and the development of returning players. While losing players can create immediate depth concerns, the coaching staff will be relying on the newcomers to quickly adapt and contribute.

Texas Tech has garnered significant attention for its aggressive approach to the transfer portal, with some analysts ranking their incoming class as one of the best in the nation. The ability of these new additions to gel with the returning players will be crucial in determining the team’s success in the 2025 season.

Despite the slimming of the roster due to these latest departures, the Red Raiders are still expected to have a competitive team in the Big 12 Conference. The influx of talent through the transfer portal has raised expectations, and the coaching staff will be working diligently to ensure the roster is prepared for the challenges of the upcoming season.
