Texas A&M’s Mike Elko Named Home Depot Coach of the Year for 2024, Leading Aggies to National Title Contention

In a remarkable turnaround, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has been honored as the 2024 Home Depot Coach of the Year, recognizing his transformative impact on the Aggies’ football program. Elko’s leadership in his inaugural season propelled Texas A&M into national title contention, a feat that few anticipated at the season’s outset.

Taking over a team that concluded the previous season with a 7–6 record, Elko instilled a culture of discipline and accountability. His approach emphasized consistent effort and adaptability, leading to significant on-field improvements. Under his guidance, the Aggies achieved an 8–5 record, including a 5–3 mark in SEC play, marking their best conference start since 1998 .

A defining moment of the season was the Aggies’ comeback victory over then-No. 8 LSU. Trailing 17–7 at halftime, Elko’s decision to insert freshman quarterback Marcel Reed ignited a second-half surge, culminating in a 38–23 win. Reed contributed three rushing touchdowns, while the defense limited LSU to just 24 rushing yards .

Elko’s emphasis on accountability extended beyond the field. He implemented a system where players were grouped to ensure punctuality and commitment, with consequences for lapses. This approach fostered a sense of responsibility and unity within the team .

Despite challenges, including roster turnover due to transfers and NFL draft declarations, Elko maintained a focus on developing young talent and reinforcing a strong team culture . His efforts not only revitalized the program but also set a foundation for sustained success.

Elko’s recognition as Home Depot Coach of the Year underscores his exceptional ability to lead and inspire. As the Aggies look ahead, the program’s resurgence under his guidance offers a promising outlook for the future.
