This week, the Ohio State Buckeyes triumphed over Notre Dame to win the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff title, with head coach Ryan Day adding his name to the list of championship-winning coaches in the playoff era.
This victory ties Ohio State with Clemson and Georgia for the second-most national championships in the CFP era, which began in 2014 when then-coach Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes claimed the title.
Alabama holds the record for the most championships in the CFP era, with three titles won in the 2015, 2017, and 2020 seasons.
USA TODAY Sports recently ranked Alabama’s 2020 team as the greatest of all-time in the playoff era, surpassing the 2019 LSU team. Paul Myerberg, a veteran college football writer, re-evaluated every national champion from the playoff era and determined that the 2020 Crimson Tide team, featuring three of the top five Heisman Trophy finalists (quarterback Mac Jones, running back Najee Harris, and wide receiver DeVonta Smith), was the best. Alabama’s closest game that season was a 52-46 win over Florida in the SEC Championship Game. The Tide then defeated Notre Dame in the CFP semifinals and Ohio State 52-24 in the national championship game.
