Steve Nash might have a pair of MVP trophies on his shelf, a feat achieved by only 15 players in the NBA’s regular season history, clinching it consecutively in 2005 and 2006 with the Phoenix Suns. But being hailed as the greatest Canadian player? Not so fast.
In a recent chat on the “Ball Don’t Stop” podcast, Nash threw his support behind Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, touting him as Canada’s finest. Stephon Marbury, a seasoned NBA veteran and now a prominent figure in Chinese basketball circles, echoed the sentiment, hailing Gilgeous-Alexander as the cream of the Canadian crop.
“He’s the best basketball player from Canada,” Marbury said
While Nash’s MVP wins might spark debate, some argue they were largely propelled by team success. Marbury, however, points to Gilgeous-Alexander’s consistency and all-around game, noting his unwavering ability to impact every facet of the game, be it scoring, playmaking, or defensive prowess.
“I think the thing that I’m going to continue to say about him is he’s been consistent,” Marbury remarked. “He’s consistently doing what he’s doing each and every night.
There’s no night that he’s coming in where he’s not performing at some type of level where he’s creating opportunities for his teammates or himself or on defense. He’s doing something to give his team a chance to win every night they step on the basketball court.”
