Birmingham Stallions Re-Sign Alex McGough as Quarterback
The United Football League transaction report revealed that the Birmingham Stallions have re-signed Alex McGough, who will be returning to his role as quarterback despite initially being listed as a wide receiver.
Journey and Achievements
After helping the Stallions secure back-to-back USFL championships, McGough signed with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers in July 2023. Although he did not make the final roster, McGough remained on the practice squad and briefly transitioned to wide receiver before being waived due to injury. He rejoined the Packers’ practice squad in November 2024.
McGough was not initially the starting quarterback for Birmingham in the 2023 USFL season but took over when J’Mar Smith was injured. McGough led the Stallions to an impressive 8-2 record, topping the USFL charts in touchdown passes, total touchdowns, and passer efficiency.
McGough’s standout moment came on July 1, 2023, when he threw four touchdown passes, leading Birmingham to a 28-12 victory over the Pittsburgh Maulers in the USFL Championship Game. He replicated his success from the previous year, when the Stallions won the USFL’s inaugural championship by defeating the Philadelphia Stars 33-30.
McGough’s return to the Stallions is a significant boost for the team as they aim for another championship run. With his proven leadership and performance, Birmingham’s prospects are looking bright.
