Seven BYU Players Secure NFL Opportunities: Three Sign, Four Earn Camp Invites
BYU football continues to make its mark on the professional stage as seven of its players from the 2024 roster have earned opportunities to pursue careers in the National Football League. Following the recent NFL Draft, three Cougars signed undrafted free agent contracts, while four others received invitations to attend NFL rookie minicamps.
Among those who signed contracts immediately after the draft were offensive lineman Kingsley Suamataia, wide receiver Kody Epps, and linebacker Max Tooley. Each of these players had standout moments during their collegiate careers and showed enough potential to convince NFL teams they deserved a shot. Their contracts give them an official place on the 90-man offseason roster, which means they’ll participate in training camp and compete for a spot on the final 53-man roster.
Kingsley Suamataia, perhaps the most high-profile of the group, had been on the radar of scouts throughout the season. Known for his size, athleticism, and footwork, Suamataia protected the blindside for BYU quarterbacks and was a cornerstone of the offensive line. While he wasn’t selected in the draft, his signing as an undrafted free agent came as no surprise. NFL teams see him as a developmental player with long-term starting potential.
Kody Epps, despite battling injuries during his time at BYU, showed flashes of brilliance and excellent route-running ability. His quickness and ability to gain separation made him an appealing option for NFL teams looking for slot receiver depth. Max Tooley, a veteran on the defense, impressed scouts with his versatility, football IQ, and leadership. His experience and ability to play both inside and outside linebacker roles contributed to his NFL opportunity.
In addition to the three signees, four other BYU players received invitations to participate in rookie minicamps, a key first step for undrafted players hoping to earn a contract. These minicamps are typically held in May and provide players with a short window to make an impression. A strong performance can lead to a contract offer and a chance to continue with the team into training camp.
While receiving a minicamp invite doesn’t guarantee a roster spot, it is still a significant opportunity. These players will compete alongside drafted rookies and other undrafted invitees, hoping to catch the eye of coaches and front office staff. In the past, several BYU alumni have made NFL rosters through this very path, so the door remains wide open.
This year’s post-draft success reflects well on BYU’s player development and coaching staff. The program has built a reputation for preparing players for the next level, even if they don’t hear their names called during the draft. The Cougars’ blend of toughness, discipline, and football intelligence continues to attract NFL attention.
As these seven players begin their professional journeys, BYU fans will be watching closely, hoping to see former Cougars succeed on Sundays. Whether as signed free agents or rookie minicamp invitees, all seven have a shot to carve out a place in the NFL.
