Thompson and Golden State have not been particularly close in their extension talks over the last few months. Meanwhile, the future Hall of Famer is coming off a disappointing season that saw him post his lowest stats since 2012-13.

With less than a month until Thompson’s free agency begins, the lack of activity is telling. He’s already been connected to the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers in the east.
The Warriors want Thompson to end his career with them. However, there are undoubtedly other elements at play here.
“The Warriors maintain a desire to retain Thompson at the right price once other aspects of their roster retool get clarified,” Slater stated. “But they haven’t exactly been pounding on his door to lay the groundwork for an extension (which can be signed at any time). In turn, Thompson, 34, appears set to test the waters of free agency for the first time in his career.
