Ryan Day’s reputation as Ohio State’s head coach was significantly boosted after his team’s recent national championship win. However, despite the success, new obstacles could prevent him from building on that momentum.
After several years of criticism for not beating Michigan, winning the Big Ten, and overcoming Clemson in the College Football Playoff, Day’s ability to meet these challenges was questioned. His failure to secure a win over Michigan since his first year as head coach, combined with his last Big Ten title coming in 2020, led to frustration, especially after Ohio State lost to a Michigan team that had struggled on the road. Fans were concerned that Day might never break through.
However, Day’s leadership turned things around in the final games of the season. His team rallied to win four major games, including a national title, silencing his critics and shifting the narrative about his tenure. Day capitalized on the momentum with widespread media appearances and a focus on top recruits, hoping to complete the transformation by finally beating Michigan and winning the Big Ten.
Yet, the landscape quickly shifted. Less than a month after the national title, Day faced the loss of several key players to the NFL draft and had to search for new coordinators and a new offensive line coach. With 15 players potentially heading to the NFL, many starting positions are now open, and new starters will need time to gel, especially with new coordinators who may take time to adjust.
The 2025 season presents additional challenges, starting with a tough opener against Texas at home and a challenging road game at Washington. Other tough matchups include games against Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and a Penn State team with championship aspirations. Moreover, Ohio State will again face Michigan on the road, with the Wolverines likely to improve and provide a difficult atmosphere.
Given these challenges, it may be difficult for Day to build on his recent success in 2025. However, if he makes the right coaching hires, gets solid quarterback play, and has his new starters perform well, he could elevate his narrative further. With the championship victory still fresh, fans are more likely to give Day a grace period if the team struggles, but the pressure will mount in 2026 to prove that the 2024 championship was not a one-time success.
