Ryan Day Says Ohio State Will Take Time to Find the Right Candidates for Three Coaching Vacancies

Ryan Day, just two weeks after leading Ohio State to a national championship, is now tasked with filling three coaching vacancies—offensive line coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator. Speaking on The Joel Klatt Show, Day acknowledged the challenges but also saw them as a natural outcome of the Buckeyes’ successful season in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. While it’s tough to lose key assistants like Justin Frye, who is heading to the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals, Chip Kelly, who is joining the Las Vegas Raiders, and Jim Knowles, who is moving to Penn State, Day expressed excitement for their new opportunities.

Reflecting on Kelly’s departure, Day shared his gratitude for their shared success, noting how special it was to win the national championship together. He also shared excitement for Kelly’s future, noting the positive reception of his story in their home state of New Hampshire.

Although Day didn’t comment on Knowles’ exit, he emphasized that Ohio State, with its high profile, offers great opportunities to attract talented coaches. With the vacancies, Day is focused on carefully selecting the right candidates, ensuring they bring a mix of rising stars and experienced coaches to the program.
