Ryan Day Reveals He Knew Chip Kelly Might Leave for NFL Before Hiring Him

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day was not caught off guard by Chip Kelly’s decision to leave for the Las Vegas Raiders after just one season as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator.

In an interview with Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt, Day revealed that he and Kelly had discussed the possibility of an NFL departure even before Kelly accepted the job at Ohio State. Despite this, Day proceeded with the hire, believing Kelly could help lead the Buckeyes to a national championship—which is exactly what happened.

“We talked about it, knowing we had a great group here. The dream was to win a national championship, and then he could decide whether to stay or move to the NFL. And that’s exactly how it played out,”Day said.

A Short but Impactful Tenure

Kelly joined Ohio State after Bill O’Brien, the team’s initial offensive coordinator hire for the 2024 season, left just three weeks into the job to become a head coach. Given Day’s longstanding relationship with Kelly—dating back to when Kelly coached him as New Hampshire’s offensive coordinator—the hire made sense.

Though Kelly signed a three-year contract, Day harbors no resentment over his one-and-done stint, instead cherishing the national title run they shared.

“One day, we’ll sit down, have a beer, and reminisce about that incredible season,”Day said. “It’s a special story, and so many people back in New Hampshire are excited for him.”

What’s Next for Ohio State?

With Kelly now in Las Vegas, Ohio State must find a new offensive coordinator to maintain their championship-caliber offense. Whoever steps into the role will inherit an elite roster, including star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, a potential Heisman Trophy contender.

While Kelly moves on to his third NFL coaching stint, his impact on Ohio State’s championship-winning season will be remembered. Now, the Buckeyes must regroup and reload as they prepare for another title run.
