RISE TO GLORY: Mike Elko Crowned 2024 Home Depot Coach of the Year After Texas A&M’s Resurgence
In his inaugural season as head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies, Mike Elko has been honored with the 2024 Home Depot Coach of the Year award, recognizing his transformative impact on the program. Elko’s leadership revitalized the Aggies, steering them to an 8–5 overall record and a 5–3 mark in Southeastern Conference (SEC) play, marking a significant improvement from previous seasons.
Elko’s return to College Station in November 2023, after serving as Duke’s head coach, was met with high expectations. Drawing from his prior experience as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021, Elko implemented a disciplined and resilient approach that quickly yielded results. The Aggies achieved notable victories, including a commanding 41–10 win over then-No. 9 Missouri, and secured their best start in SEC play since joining the conference.
Despite a narrow 35–31 loss to USC in the Las Vegas Bowl, the season showcased the Aggies’ resurgence under Elko’s guidance. His ability to foster a culture of accountability and excellence has been instrumental in the team’s progress. Elko’s recognition as Coach of the Year underscores his exceptional leadership and the promising future of Texas A&M football.
As the Aggies look ahead to the 2025 season, Elko’s vision and commitment position Texas A&M as a formidable contender in collegiate football, with aspirations of national prominence.
