RETIREMENT PLAN: Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo Buys $39M Georgia Ranch for Ultimate Outdoor Playground
Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo is planning for life after the hardwood with a bold and adventurous vision. The Hall of Fame coach has purchased a sprawling $39 million ranch in Georgia, which he’s calling the ultimate family retreat—complete with plans for wakesurfing, hunting, and even a private racetrack.
The acquisition, which has raised eyebrows across the sports and real estate worlds alike, underscores Izzo’s desire to create a dynamic family sanctuary that celebrates the outdoors and quality time. After nearly three decades of leading one of college basketball’s most respected programs, Izzo says he’s thinking ahead—but not necessarily stepping away just yet.
A Dream Realized
“I’ve given my life to basketball, and I wouldn’t change a thing,” Izzo said in a statement confirming the purchase. “But I wanted to build something for my family—something where we can disconnect, have fun, and be together. This place is about creating memories.”
Situated in northern Georgia, the property features over 1,000 acres of scenic landscapes, including a lake suitable for water sports, dense woodlands for hunting, and expansive open fields ideal for trail riding and racing. Izzo has reportedly already begun working with architects and developers to add a custom-designed racetrack and outdoor sports facilities, making the property a true recreational playground.
Built for Family and Legacy
At the heart of the ranch is family. Izzo, who is known as much for his fiery coaching style as for his deep loyalty to players and loved ones, emphasized that the ranch isn’t a retirement from life—it’s a transition to a new chapter where family comes first.
“I want to teach my grandkids how to fish. I want to race dirt bikes with my son. I want to host family reunions, team retreats—everything,” Izzo said. “This isn’t just about me. It’s about legacy and being present in the lives of the people I love most.”
His wife, Lupe Izzo, is said to be closely involved in the ranch’s design, ensuring the space reflects their family’s values, while also incorporating elements of comfort and sustainability.
Not Stepping Away… Yet
While the $39 million ranch hints at a life beyond basketball, Izzo made it clear he has not set a date for retirement. Entering his 30th season as head coach of the Spartans, Izzo remains as competitive and committed as ever. However, he admits the purchase is part of a longer-term vision.
“I’m still chasing championships. I’m still recruiting. But I’m also starting to think about what life looks like after that final whistle,” he said.
Spartan for Life
Known for his fierce loyalty to Michigan State, Izzo has turned down numerous NBA offers over the years. Now, as he eyes his future, it’s clear he’s doing it on his own terms—with the same energy and vision he’s brought to the court for decades.
Whether he’s pacing the sidelines at the Breslin Center or cruising the trails of his new Georgia ranch, Tom Izzo remains one thing above all: a man committed to excellence, family, and purpose.
