As the 2025 college football season approaches, West Virginia University (WVU) enters with both returning talent and fresh faces, prompting a closer look at each position group. From offense to defense, here’s how the Mountaineers stack up heading into the fall.
1. Offensive Line
Arguably WVU’s strongest unit, the offensive line returns multiple starters and has the depth to anchor the offense. With All-Big 12-caliber talent and veteran leadership, this group is expected to provide consistency in both pass protection and run blocking.
2. Running Backs
With CJ Donaldson returning, the Mountaineers boast a workhorse back who has already proven he can carry the load. A deep room behind him gives this group plenty of firepower and versatility.
3. Quarterback
Garrett Greene showed improvement in 2024 and brings dual-threat capability. If he continues progressing as a passer, the QB position could elevate WVU’s offense to another level.
4. Linebackers
This group is experienced and aggressive, with speed to cover sideline-to-sideline. They’ll be the heart of the defense, especially in stopping the run.
5. Defensive Line
While not as dominant as the O-line, the defensive front has size and rotation options. Consistency in pressure will be key to their impact.
6. Wide Receivers
There’s potential here, but lack of proven production keeps the group mid-tier. A breakout season from a key target could quickly boost their standing.
7. Secondary
After a shaky 2024, the secondary remains a concern. Transfer additions and improved depth offer hope, but they’ll need to show improvement in coverage and tackling.
8. Special Teams
Reliable but unspectacular, WVU’s special teams must find consistency in field goal accuracy and kick returns.
WVU enters 2025 with a balanced roster. If certain groups take a step forward, the Mountaineers cou
ld contend in the Big 12.
