Penn State’s BEST Program—short for Build and Enhance Skills for Tomorrow—is shaping the future of Extension services by equipping the next generation of professionals with the tools, training, and real-world experience needed to succeed. Developed by Penn State Extension, the BEST Program is designed to address both current challenges and emerging needs in agriculture, community development, youth programming, and environmental sustainability.
The program targets early-career professionals and recent graduates interested in pursuing impactful careers in Extension. Participants receive hands-on training in communication, leadership, community engagement, and technical subject matter. They also get the opportunity to work closely with experienced Extension educators and faculty mentors across Pennsylvania, giving them practical insights into how educational outreach functions on the ground.
A core component of the BEST Program is its focus on building interpersonal and organizational leadership skills—essential for anyone working with diverse communities. Trainees are immersed in workshops, field visits, and service-learning opportunities that emphasize problem-solving and innovation. The curriculum also emphasizes adaptability, as today’s Extension professionals must navigate rapidly evolving issues such as climate change, digital access, and shifting agricultural landscapes.
Graduates of the BEST Program are well-prepared to step into roles that require not only technical knowledge but also the ability to build trust and collaboration within communities. By investing in these future leaders, Penn State Extension is not only strengthening its own team but also ensuring that rural and urban communities across the state continue to benefit from high-quality, research-based education and support.
In a time when Extension services are more vital than ever, the BEST Program stands out as a proactive initiative focused on sustainability, innovation, and long-term impact—laying the foundation for a more informed and resilient Pennsy
