Penn State wrestling legend Carter Starocci has publicly endorsed redshirt freshman Zach Ryder as the successor for the 184-pound weight class. This endorsement came shortly after the program announced the transfer of Rocco Welsh from Ohio State, who is also expected to compete at 184 pounds.
Starocci, a five-time NCAA champion and one of the most decorated wrestlers in collegiate history, took to social media to express his support for Ryder. In a now-deleted post, he wrote, “Zach Ryder all day baby,” signaling his belief in Ryder’s readiness to step into the starting role .
Ryder, a highly touted recruit, redshirted his freshman year and compiled an impressive 8-0 record in open competition, including victories over NCAA qualifiers and a pin against 2024 All-American TJ Stewart . His performance demonstrated his potential to contribute significantly to the Nittany Lions’ lineup.
However, the arrival of Welsh, who previously wrestled at 174 pounds and was a national runner-up, introduced stiff competition for the 184-pound spot. Welsh expressed his intent to earn the starting position, stating, “If I want to be the best wrestler in the world and accomplish my goals, then, if I can’t make a starting lineup, then I’m not on the right track” .
Facing increased competition, Ryder has entered the transfer portal to explore opportunities where he can secure a starting role . His departure underscores the depth and competitiveness within Penn State’s wrestling program.
Starocci’s endorsement of Ryder highlights the respect and confidence he has in the young wrestler’s abilities. As Ryder seeks a new program to continue his collegiate wrestling career, his development at Penn State and support from a legend like Starocci will undoubtedly be valuable assets.
