Penn State Clinches Big Ten Regular Season Wrestling Title
The Penn State Nittany Lions added another accolade to their historic wrestling program by securing the 2025 Big Ten Regular Season Championship, finishing with a perfect 8-0 record in conference dual meets. The title was clinched with a decisive 29-9 victory over Illinois, capping off a season marked by dominance, consistency, and depth across all weight classes.
Under the leadership of head coach Cael Sanderson, the Nittany Lions have continued their remarkable run of success, with this being their 11th Big Ten regular season title — all achieved since Sanderson took the helm in 2009. Known for producing championship teams, Sanderson once again has his squad firing on all cylinders.
Key contributors throughout the season included Carter Starocci (184 lbs), Levi Haines (174 lbs), Tyler Kasak (157 lbs), and Luke Lilledahl (125 lbs) — all of whom played critical roles in shutting down some of the nation’s toughest conference opponents like Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio State.
Penn State’s depth has been one of its greatest strengths this season, with all 10 starters ranked nationally and consistently producing bonus points. Whether it was technical falls, major decisions, or pins, the Lions have shown an ability to dominate in every format of competition.
Coach Sanderson credited the win to his athletes’ focus and commitment. “This group trains with a purpose. They hold each other accountable, and they’re constantly striving to be the best version of themselves.”
With both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles secured, Penn State enters the NCAA Championships as the favorite, eyeing yet another national title to cap off a historic season. The regular season crown is yet another reminder of their unmatched standard in collegiate wrestling.
