One of the Nation’s Best: Mahlstedt Named NCBWA Stopper-Of-The-Year Award Finalist
Miami Hurricanes standout closer Andrew Mahlstedt has been named a finalist for the prestigious NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, given annually to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. The announcement comes after a stellar season in which Mahlstedt emerged as one of the most dominant arms in the country.
A junior right-hander, Mahlstedt anchored Miami’s bullpen with a powerful mix of velocity, command, and poise under pressure. He finished the regular season with a 1.84 ERA, 12 saves, and 47 strikeouts in just 39 innings, frequently shutting down opposing teams in the game’s most critical moments. His consistency and leadership played a pivotal role in helping the Hurricanes make a strong postseason push.
“This is a tremendous honor for Andrew and a reflection of the work he’s put in all year,” said head coach Gino DiMare. “He’s a competitor, a leader, and one of the most reliable closers we’ve ever had at Miami.”
Mahlstedt is one of just five finalists selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The award, established in 2005, has been won by several future MLB stars and is considered the top recognition for college relief pitching.
With this national spotlight now shining brightly on Mahlstedt, the Hurricanes’ closer is not just a key figure in Miami’s success — he’s cemented himself among the elite in all of college baseball.
The winner will be announced during the College World Series in Omaha later this month.
