Oklahoma Sooners add quarterback via the transfer portal
The Oklahoma Sooners continued their active spring with the addition of former Mercer quarterback Whitt Newbauer through the transfer portal.
Newbauer comes to Oklahoma after spending his true freshman season in Macon, Georgia, with the Mercer Bears. He played in nine games last season and threw for 1,398 yards, 12 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. He also added a pair of touchdowns on the ground. When you remove sacks from rushing totals, as Pro Football Focus does, he carried the ball 31 times for 146 yards.
In his lone game against a Power Four opponent, Newbauer threw for 140 yards and a touchdown against Alabama in Mercer’s 52-7 loss to the Crimson Tide. He helped lead Mercer to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs in 2024.
He does a great job throwing down the field, where he completed 48.6% of his passes on attempts of 20 or more yards.
He’ll have three years of eligibility and joins an Oklahoma quarterback room that features John Mateer, Michael Hawkins, Jr., and Jett Niu. Newbauer adds an arm with a little bit of experience to the mix that can provide some competitive depth.
