Oklahoma QB John Mateer Denies Gambling Allegations, Claims Venmo Transactions Were Inside Jokes
Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer has publicly denied allegations of sports gambling following the circulation of Venmo transaction screenshots from 2022. The transactions, which were labeled “sports gambling” and referenced a UCLA vs. USC game, surfaced on social media and raised concerns due to NCAA regulations prohibiting student-athletes from engaging in sports betting.
Mateer, who transferred to Oklahoma from Washington State, addressed the issue on social media, stating, “The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false. My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends.” He further emphasized, “I have never bet on sports. I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise.”
The University of Oklahoma has acknowledged the situation and confirmed that there is currently no known NCAA investigation underway. The university also stated that it utilizes ProhiBet for comprehensive monitoring of sports gambling activities and takes any allegations seriously, working closely with the NCAA in such situations.
As of now, there is no indication that the allegations will affect Mateer’s eligibility or standing with the team. The Sooners are preparing for their upcoming season, and Mateer is expected to play a key role as their starting quarterback.
