Ohio State Transfer Hero Kanu Chooses Texas Over Florida, Georgia, and Texas A&M

Texas football has bolstered its defensive line with the addition of former Ohio State defensive tackle Hero Kanu, who committed to the Longhorns on Wednesday morning. Kanu, who entered the transfer portal after two seasons at Ohio State, chose Texas over other strong contenders such as the Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, and Texas A&M Aggies.

A Key Addition to Texas Defensive Line

Kanu’s commitment adds more depth and skill to Texas defensive tackle rotation. He visited Texas over the weekend, following trips to Florida and Georgia, and it was during his brief visit to Austin that he solidified his decision to join the Longhorns. Kanu shared his positive experience with Horns247, saying, Man, it was cool. It was only a limited time, so it was only like a conversation. I had a good conversation with Coach Sark. Just having a conversation about the future.

Impressive Stats at Ohio State

During his two seasons at Ohio State, Kanu posted 14 total tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, five quarterback pressures, and 10 defensive stops. In the 2024 season, he played 123 defensive snaps across 15 games. Notably, he made his mark in the College Football Playoff national semifinals at the Cotton Bowl, where he recorded one tackle and one defensive stop against Texas.

Texas Transfer Portal Success

Kanu’s transfer is significant for the Longhorns, as he becomes their third transfer defensive tackle of the offseason. Along with Kanu, Texas has added Travis Shaw (from North Carolina) and Cole Brevard (from Purdue). The addition of Kanu is a win for defensive line coach Kenny Baker and the Texas staff as they continue to strengthen their defensive front ahead of the 2025 season, which will see the team enter the SEC.

A Blue-Chip Prospect with High Potential

Kanu, a 6-foot-4, 315-pound lineman, was a highly regarded prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, ranking as the No. 129 overall player and the No. 19 defensive lineman in the 247Sports Composite rankings. Originally from Germany, Kanu started playing football in 2021 after growing up playing soccer.

With his physical tools and athleticism, Kanu is expected to contribute both in run defense, where he can anchor the line and battle double teams, and as an interior pass rusher. Despite being early in his football career, Kanu’s potential remains high. With two years of eligibility left, he has the opportunity to develop into a more refined and versatile defensive tackle for the Longhorns.

Looking Ahead to the 2025 Season

Kanu’s addition strengthens Texas defensive line heading into a crucial season in the SEC. With his size, strength, and athleticism, Kanu will play a key role in Texas defensive front, helping the Longhorns maintain their competitive edge in the conference and beyond. The Longhorns coaching staff is excited about his future development and the impact he will have in the trenches during the 2025 season.
